“Gentle giant” dog was found as severely matted stray — after makeover, he’s looking for a home

A “gentle giant” dog was found as a stray, badly in need of help with a thick layer of matted fur. But after being transformed by a makeover, this sweet dog is doing great and searching for his forever home.

Yeti, a three-and-a-half-year-old Great Pyrenees mix, was picked up as a stray and arrived at Lake Norman Humane, in North Carolina, in July. He was in rough shape: the shelter said he covered in “severely matted” fur, which caused “so much pain he was struggling to walk” due to skin irritation.

Great Pyrenees dogs have a double coat, consisting of a long, coarse outer coat and a soft, thick undercoat, so it’s no surprise that Yeti’s fur grew uncomfortably thick and matted while he was a neglected stray.

Thankfully, the shelter soon found a groomer who could give him the relief he needed. Over four hours, they shaved off his matted fur, and soon he was looking like a whole new dog.

Since then, Yeti has been thriving in foster care, and is still looking for his forever home. At over 120 pounds, he’s described as a “polar bear” and a “gentle giant” who loves to nap and lounge around the house.

“He’s a big boy, but he’s a gentle giant,” Lake Norman Humane wrote on Facebook. “What you see here is what you get. He’s perfect on a leash, falling right into stride beside you. He’s been taking hikes with his foster mom and loves to get out in the fresh air. He’s content to take a nap pretty much anytime, and while he can be a bit of a princess (legend says people ball up his food in little meatballs because that’s the way he likes it), he is the royalty you need in your home!”

What a remarkable transformation — we’re so glad Yeti got the love and care he deserves and is now on the path to a new life. If you are interested in adopting Yeti you can visit Lake Norman Humane or get more information on their website.
